In January, I had the pleasure to testify in front of the Wisconsin legislature in support of the Trust Code Trailer Bill (now 2023 Act 127 and effective March 23, 2024.) One of the questions asked was how the estate planning practitioners would become aware of the new law. I explained that members of the study group would be active in writing professional articles and making presentations to estate planning professionals. An excellent example of this is the article written by the study group co-chair, Mark Shiller, which was published in the Wisconsin Lawyer magazine in May.
I am now active in the presentation component of the education process. In May, I spoke to the Milwaukee Bar Association and the Wisconsin Bankers Trust Section. In June, I will be presenting to the Milwaukee Estate Planning Forum and will co-present with Mark Shiller to the State Bar. Click here to view a copy of the comprehensive training outline that I presented to the WBA in May.
The new law is an important update and clarification of the Wisconsin Trust Code, and we are happy to share our knowledge with you. Prairie Trust is planning for a comprehensive Trust Code Trailer Bill training program this fall in Waukesha County, and I also have been asked to speak to law firms to discuss the new law. If you are interested in having me present to your law firm or to have me present to another estate planning council, please contact Terry Doyle, our Director of Fiduciary Sales, at (262) 953-2435 or tdoyle@prairietrust.com.
If you have any questions about the new legislation or have suggestions for further changes to Wisconsin’s trust and estate laws, please contact me. Otherwise, we appreciate all referrals for our services and would be happy to discuss any opportunity that might help you and your clients. If you have an opportunity to discuss, please contact Terry Doyle.
